Hôm nọ, nhân đọc bài đăng của Chị Ai Uu Du (Góc truyện THH: Kỷ niệm sợ té...) về kinh nghiệm của NT Nghịch Nhĩ trên chiếc OH 6 của Lục Quân Mỹ, tôi tình cờ có một số hình ảnh và chút kinh nghiệm liên hệ nên định chia xẻ với quý vị hay có tật giật mình mỗi khi nghe tiếng rotors phành phạch đâu đó, thì mắt sẽ đảo tìm xem đó là loại trực thăng gì !

Chiếc trực thăng trong video là MD 500E, hậu thân của Hughes 369A (OH 6 mà NT Nghịch Nhĩ đã từng ngồi lên)
Khởi đầu, hảng Hughes chế chiếc Hughes 269A mà nhiều người đã từng biết qua trong "primary flight training" như là TH-55A.
Rồi từ Hughes 269A, Hughes 369A ra đời với fuselage dài hơn, với 4 rotor blades, và với máy turbine (317shp - shaft horse power). Chiếc này đã được US Army dùng trong chiến tranh Việt Nam như scout helicopters, gọi là OH 6 (Cayuse). Màu Op biểu tượng của OH 6 là trắng (white), trong khi màu của Cobras là đỏ (red). Nếu Op team là 2 chiếc Cobras thì là Red team, nếu có 1 Cobra (red) + 1 Cayuse (OH 6,white) thì là Pink team.
LOACH ( từ chữ LOH ): Light Observation/ Attack Helicopter. OH 6A có V tail.
Cảnh tượng quen thuộc gắn liền với OH 6 và chiến tranh Việt Nam là anh lính Mỹ vạm vở đu bên hông chiếc Loach quăng lưới chụp bắt du kích VC đang chạy trối chết dưới đất.
Những năm đầu 70s, Lục Quân Mỹ có thành lập Airshow Team với trực thăng OH 6, được gọi là Silver Eagles.
"And so, in 1972, the Silver Eagles were organized. The mission of the team was to assist US Army personnel procurement and retention efforts and to contribute to the public understanding of the role of Army aircraft by demonstrating proficiency and versatility in the performance of precision helicopter flight.
When first organized, the Silver Eagles were the only helicopter demonstration team in America. Based at Fort Rucker, Alabama, the Silver Eagles consisted of 25 enlisted volunteers and 12 officer aviators. The team was assigned two helicopter models - nine OH-6A Cayuse helicopters that had been completely overhauled after seeing combat service in Viet Nam, and nine factory fresh OH-58 Kiowa helicopters. Shortly after their organization, though, the OH-58 helicopters were transferred to other units and the Silver Eagles retained the nine OH-6A's painted in olive drab and white colors.
Though an aerial demonstration team, their routines did not consist of aerobatics – rather, the routines consisted of flying techniques Army aviators were required to master. Speeds and altitudes of precision maneuvers ranged from zero miles per hour at ground level to 140 miles per hour at one thousand feet.
Seven helicopters were used during each demonstration, with specific names / positions: Lead, Left Wing, Right Wing, Slot, Lead Solo, Opposing Solo… and Bozo the Clown. The Bozo unit wore the face of a clown – a red nose, big eyes, and floppy ears and a straw hat - and performed antics to entertain the audience while the other aircraft were positioning for the next maneuver – such as playing with barrels along the ground, or playing with its yoyo. Due to the use of Bozo, there was almost always at least one helicopter performing in front of the crowd at all times during their normal 35 minute presentation."
Mặc dù Cayuse (OH 6) cùng cỡ và được trang bị cùng cỡ máy turbine với Bell 206 (OH 58), nhưng OH 6 không có hydraulics system. Rotors của OH 6 là fully articulated giống như của TH 55. Cyclic trim của OH 6 được trợ giúp bởi 2 actuators (roll and pitch) qua cái nón cắc-chú (conical hat) trên cyclic, giống như trên TH 55. Nếu rành cách dùng cái nón cắc-chú trên cyclic này thì chuyện bay bổng bình thường khoẻ re, nhưng nếu quậy chiếc tàu nhiều như người hoa tiêu Mỹ đã cho NT Nghich Nhĩ thấy thì phải dùng nhiều đến bắp thịt tay.
Nói chung, control responses của OH-6 nhanh lẹ hơn của UH-1 và của OH-58 trong nhiều flight maneuvers. Controls của MD 500 series rất chắc chắn (taut) và chính xác (precise), bay loại trực thăng này người ta ví giống như lái sport cars. Ở Việt Nam, trong thời chiến tranh trước 30-4-75, sau H-34s, là UH-1 nhưng loại trực thăng này của KQ/VNCH được trang bị chỉ một cở máy turbine Lycoming T53 L-13 cho ra 1,400 shp, nên sức lift chỉ xê xích nhau một chút thôi. Những models khác nhau của MD 500 với những cỡ máy khác nhau sẽ mang lại cho pilots những thích thú khác nhau.
Đến đời Model D, thì Hughes 369 D có T-tail và 5 rotor blades, và máy mạnh hơn (420 shp).
Đến Model E, thì trực thăng MD 500 có cái mũi nhọn và máy mạnh hơn như thấy trong video trên, và đã được chế tạo bởi McDonnell Douglas.
Loại được dùng nhiều ở Afghanistan, là MD 530F, có máy mạnh hơn (650 shp), và có thể phân biệt với tail rotor drive shaft dài hơn khoảng 1 foot (tail rotor asembly tuột đàng sau vertical fin khoảng 1 foot). Loại này hữu hiệu trong môi trường " hot and high" (nhiệt độ bên ngoài nóng và cao độ hoạt động cao).
Hiện nay, McDonnell Douglas đã cho ra lò MD 540A, với máy mạnh hơn nhiều (700 shp) và trang bị 6 rotor blades, với hoả lực hùng hậu.
Hughes 369 hay MD 500 có nhiều derivatives như MH 520N (NOTAR: không dùng tail rotors), MD 600N (Stretched body), ...
