3389th PTS Reunion - 2020 - Save The Date

Fellow IPs and Former Students,

I hope your summer has gone well and that you are ready for some fall weather. I sure am. As I write, those living in the southern Atlantic seaboard states anxiously wait and watch as Hurricane Dorian approaches. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone that is and will be affected.

Time certainly moves along and it is hard to believe that nearly a year has passed since we met in Biloxi for our 2018 reunion. As you may recall, we decided to hold our next gathering in 2020 in San Antonio, thus Bill and Helga Burns have been hard at work arranging for that event. So here is an early “SAVE THE DATE” notice and a short preview of our plans for that reunion.

Date: October 20-23, 2020 (Tuesday – Friday)
Location: The El Tropicano Riverwalk Hotel, 110 Lexington Avenue, San Antonio, TX 78205.

The hotel is located directly on the banks of the world-famous San Antonio Riverwalk in the heart of the contemporary Museum Reach of the Riverwalk. The El Tropicano Riverwalk is a “resort style” tropical themed hotel. Room Rate: $114 plus tax. Self-parking: $16 plus tax per day. (Note: This is the same hotel that we used for the 2012 Reunion. It has been under renovation and that work continues, so we should see a very nice venue.)

Local Attractions:

· Enjoy a walk/jog along the Riverwalk’s progressive Museum Reach (just a few feet from the hotel’s front door).
· El Tropicano is the closest hotel to the Tobin Performing Arts Center (across street from hotel) and “El Trop” is utilized by many performers.
· Visit Pearl Brewery – old brewery transformed - a neighborhood that is a culinary and cultural gathering place. Restaurants, Cafes, Retailers and more – full of life and activity – enjoy the walk or take a river-taxi.
· Double Decker 50 Minute Tour (reservation required) Hop-on/Hop-off.
· Enjoy a narrated tour with Alamo Helicopter Tours – from 6-8 minutes, 10-12 minutes and more…view the Missions, Downtown, The Hill Country and more.
· River Walk Taxi Barge - Tour the River Walk – network of walkways along the banks of the San Antonio River lined by bars, shops, restaurants…a great tourist attraction.
· Ready for an adventure from a thrilling down river trip to a peaceful kayak The Mission Adventure Tours offers many unique kayak trips for large groups, corporate tours and team building.
· One Mile to the El Mercado filled with shops vending colorful Mexican imports & restaurants.
· La Villita Historic Arts Village (fine art galleries, stores selling souvenirs, gifts, pottery and more.
· Ten Blocks to Rivercenter Shopping Mall.
· Ten Blocks to the Alamo.
· One Mile from Hemisfair Plaza.
· 8.5 Miles from the San Antonio International Airport.

Fellow IP's, Former Students, & Relatives,

Regrettably, our ad hoc Reunion Committee has decided to cancel our 3389th PTS Reunion scheduled for October 20th thru 23rd, 2020. There are several factors that brought us to this decision. The first and primary reason...COVID-19 and the uncertainty it poses for our collective future for the remainder of the year and likely into 2021. None of us felt comfortable trying to hold a reunion that undoubtedly would involve close contact, some commercial travel, and staying in and eating at various locations with varying degrees of COVID-19 protection during this ongoing health crisis.

Further, our host hotel, the El Tropicana Riverwalk Hotel, informed us they intend to remain closed until the entire hotel's renovations are fully complete, which will be beyond our scheduled arrival this coming October. El Tropicana offered us the option to relocate our reunion headquarters to their "sister" hotel. However, we believe that hotel would be a downgrade in amenities and much further away from the San Antonio "Riverwalk," one of the prime attractions for us to enjoy during the reunion. Essentially, that coupled with the aforementioned health concerns means the decision is easy. It's "No Go."

However, all may not be lost lost because we can hold our reunion at approximately the same time the following year (October 2021); that is unless we learn otherwise from a survey of our membership. If we proceed for 2021, we will be at the fully renovated El Tropicano Riverwalk Hotel in San Antonio at the same rate enjoying the same amenities. Please be thinking about whether or not you would come if we held the reunion at that time.

On or about June 15th, I will send you another email with a short survey to determine the interest you may have about continuing with our reunion as planned, but in October 2021. It will be a simple "Yes" or "No." Please think it over during the interim weeks and when the survey arrives, take a moment to respond with your answer. This isn't a commitment, but rather how you think you feel about coming if the current COVID-19 concerns are under control. Your responses will help Bill, the committee and I know whether there is sufficient interest in a reunion at that time (October 2021) and therefore give us guidance as to whether we should proceed or not.

Sorry for the bad news re our reunion this year, however it's best to stay as safe as we can and look to the future. Thank you to each of you who continually support our reunions through your attendance as well as your kind thoughts to our entire reunion committee. Much appreciated.
