Fleet Week Sea & Air Parade
This event is soaring back to San Diego with great fanfare as we prepare to experience the best of the U.S. military on display and in action with cruisers, amphibious ships, destroyers, frigates, submarines, and landing craft in addition to a demonstration of SEAL capabilities, Coast Guard Search and Rescue, a fly-over of contemporary Navy and World War II aircraft, and much more.
The Fleet Week Sea & Air Parade STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) Fair showcases the latest technology that is both fascinating and fun for all ages. Lockheed Martin, SAIC, NASA, SPAWAR Systems Center Pacific (SSC PAC), the Office of Naval Research (ONR) and the U.S. Naval Academy bring this technology for the public to experience hands-on.

This event will feature interactive demonstrations and dynamic speakers to engage kids and families in all that encompasses STEM in order to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.

An exciting addition to the event will be a demonstration of Virtual and Augmented reality featuring technologies from ONR’s Battlespace Exploitation of Mixed Reality (BEMR) Lab. BEMR is designed to showcase and demonstrate cutting edge, low-cost commercial mixed reality, virtual reality and augmented reality technologies used in training, operations, repair and maintenance for the warfighter by collaborating with engineers and human factors scientists.

Kids and adults can drive an underwater robot called SeaPerch in a 1000-gallon tank at the Fleet Week STEM Fair. Visitors can operate a Sea Perch—a small and simple Remotely Operated Underwater Vehicle (ROV)—and learn about how underwater vehicles are made and deployed to solve problems within the field of Ocean Engineering.

The ONR’s SeaPerch is part of an innovative underwater robotics program that equips teachers and students with the resources they need to build an underwater ROV in an in-school or out-of-school setting. Students build the ROV from a kit comprised of low-cost, easily accessible parts, following a curriculum that teaches basic engineering and science concepts with a marine engineering theme.)

SPAWAR Systems Center Pacific’s mission is to enable information warfare superiority for our Naval, Joint, National and Coalition warfighters through research, development, delivery and support of integrated capabilities. Some of those on display at the STEM Fair include Laser Communication Sets with modulating video and sound using camera and microphone, Straw Rocket Launchers featuring physics concepts including force and motion, mass, thrust, and center of gravity while making predictions and measurements, and the Lego Robot with graphical programming which manipulates and controls these robots via tablets and computers.

The U.S. Naval Academy STEM Center booth will have engineering and science hands-on Navy related activities. The activities are appropriate for kids of all ages and will be facilitated by midshipmen from the Naval Academy.
