Kính chào quý vị cựu hoa tiêu T-37 Sheppard AFB,



Khi chúng ta chia tay trong buổi hội ngộ tại Wichita Falls năm 2014, tất cả IP's và khóa sinh hoa tiêu Việt Nam đều đồng ý chúng ta sẽ gặp lại nhau trong một kỳ hội ngộ tới vào khoảng 2 hoặc 3 năm. Cuộc hẹn đó đang được sắp đặt bởi một số vị IP's đã từng tốt nghiệp tại trường Võ Bị Không Quân Hoa Kỳ Colorado Springs, đứng đầu nhóm tổ chức là Thiếu Tướng hồi hưu Curt Emery, cựu IP tại Sheppard.

Ban tổ chức muốn biết số người có ý định tham gia buổi hội ngộ 2017 và muốn lấy ỳ kiến của quý vị về thời gian tổ chức để đặt chỗ và sắp xếp chương trình. Xin quý vị hồi âm cho biết:

1. Số người có ý định tham dự.
2. Xin cho biết ý kiến về những ngày sau đây: July 6-9, July 20-23, July 27-30, Aug 10-13, Aug 17-20, Aug 24-27

Hiện nay có một số sinh viên sĩ quan gốc Việt Nam đang theo học tại trường Air Force Academy, các vị IP trong ban tổ chức muốn sắp xếp để quý vị cựu hoa tiêu Việt Nam gặp gỡ với các SVSQ thế hệ sau, tuy nhiên thời điểm thuận lợi nhất để có thể gặp các em là khi bắt đầu niên học mới khoảng giữa tháng 8.

The 88th Flying Training Squadron recently hosted the Vietnam Air Force Pilots Reunion for 230 former student pilots, instructors and family members who returned to Sheppard Air Force Base, Texa, after more than four decades. The Sheppard T-37 pilot training program activated in 1971 and closed in 1974 with the drawdown of U.S. forces in Vietnam. The national Vietnam Commemoration Project encourages bases to conduct three events in a two-year period to increase awareness of this historical period. SHEPPARD AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- Bill Clifton, 80th Flying Training Wing historian, is spearheading a Vietnam Commemoration Project that will kick off a three-project commitment to engage the public and increase awareness of the integral role of the Vietnam era to military aviation's history with an emphasis on Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas.

The first commemoration event comes on the heels of the recent Vietnam Air Force pilots reunion initiated by Lt. Col. Tyler Nelson, 88th Flying Training Squadron commander. Nelson reached out to a former instructor pilot from the early 1970's, Gary Dehnel, to gauge interest on a reunion at Sheppard.

Interest was so high it took just a few months to coordinate. Capt. Justin Warner, 88th FTS, attended to every detail using social media and a specific website for the reunion.

More than 230 Vietnamese Air Force pilots, instructor pilots and their families were hosted at the 80th Flying Training Wing the weekend of Sep. 26-27. Thirty volunteers ensured tours, static displays, lunch, briefings and a banquet in Wichita Falls impressed the visitors whose memory of the area was almost half a century old.

Warner emphasized how important the historical aspect of the event was to current pilots in training.

"This event helped show current students and instructors some of the history of the training here and how some of our early partnerships with other nations were formed," he said. "Though our training is different in many ways now, it still is the same in its focus to provide our allies with the best trained pilots in the world."
Numerous retired distinguished visitors attended, including Lt. Gen. Richard "Tex" Brown, Brig. Gen. Curtis Emery, and Brig. Gen. Ben Nelson.

Retired Lt. Col. Bob Wasserott, the first VNAF squadron commander and guest speaker for the event, recounted that when he got his orders for the Vietnamese squadron, he said, "what's that?"

The 3632d PTS activated in April 1971 with the additional mission of Vietnamese Air Force T-37 training. In an organizational change in 1973, the 3632nd became the 88th Flying Training Squadron.

What started out as two desks facing each other and 18 airplanes with 10,000 flight hours on them, Wasserott built into a squadron with 54 aircraft flying 335 combat missions.

"They were great airplanes," he said. "The Vietnamese Air Force pilot training was the frosting on the cake of my career. They were great students, great pilots." Wasserott will be 85 years old in January.

Due to the drawdown of U.S. forces in Vietnam and a regime change, the twenty-five students in the last class, Class 75-08, sere sent back to Vietnam in August without starting training in 1974.

For Lan Tu, of Huntington Beach, California, it was the chance of a lifetime. He left Sheppard in 1974 and was thrilled to share the base again with his wife, An. Traveling from California, they decided a week-long Texas tour, which included a trip to Wichita Falls, San Antonio and Austin.

"We wanted to get the chance to see some of our old classmates and instructors, some of whom we haven't seen in forty years," he said. "It was an amazing experience to be a part of and very emotional for many of the Vietnamese, as well as, Americans."

Clifton, serving as the Vietnam Commemoration Project Steering Committee Chairman, received approval to coordinate several base projects. The first event will be a Cold War Oral History Workshop scheduled for Feb. 27, 2015, in the Sheppard Heritage Center.

"With the huge success of the SAFB Vietnam Air Force Pilots reunion, we anticipate a high interest in the commemoration project," he said. "Plans will include a Cold War Oral History Round-up in the community in April and researching the possibility of the Vietnam Traveling Wall coming to Wichita Falls in 2016."

Trong mấy tháng vừa qua, hai vị cựu IP: Bill Miller và Curtis Emery đã bỏ nhiều thời gian cũng như công sức để thực hiện cuộc hội ngộ sắp tới cho tất cả cựu Khóa Sinh Hoa Tiêu cũng như Huấn Luyện Viên T-37 tại Sheppard AFB. Hôm nay tôi xin được thông báo tóm tắt đến Quý vị chương trình và diễn tiến của buổi hội ngộ sắp tới:

Chương trình chính thức sẽ bắt đầu vào ngày thứ Năm 10 tháng 8 năm 2017 và chấm dứt vào ngày Chủ Nhật 13 tháng 8 năm 2017. Quý vị có thể dành thêm thời gian trước hoặc sau ngày hội ngộ để thăm viếng Denver và Colorado Springs, hai thành phố này có rất nhiều địa danh nổi tiếng để Quý vị và gia đình thưởng lãm trong thời gian này.

Tướng Emery đã ký hợp đồng với khách sạn Colorado Springs Marriott Hotel, đây là địa điểm chính của cuộc hội ngộ. Tháng 8 là thời điểm đông khách du lịch nhất của năm, giá bình thường là $189/đêm, tuy nhiên Tướng Emery đã thương thuyết để khách sạn đồng ý cho chúng ta giá $129/đêm + 10.25% tax, khách sạn cũng đồng ý cho chúng ta giá đặc biệt kể từ ngày 7 tháng 8 cho tới 16 tháng 8, tức trước và sau chương trình hội ngộ 3 ngày. Số phòng với giá đặc biệt có giới hạn, do đó tôi đề nghị quý vị đặt phòng ngay sau khi chúng tôi phổ biến chi tiết qua một Web site đang được thực hiện bởi vị cựu IP Bill Miller.

Quý vị trong Ban Tổ Chức sẽ mời một vị khách đặc biệt, xuất thân từ trường Air Force Academy và đã từng thực hiện nhiều phi vụ tại Việt Nam trong thời kỳ chiến tranh để nói chuyện trong bữa tiệc chính vào tối thứ Bảy ngày 12 tháng 8 năm 2017.

Tất cả chương trình hội ngộ, đặt phòng khách sạn, cũng như ghi danh và những nơi có thể thăm viếng tại Colorado Springs đều sẽ được đưa vào Web site của IP Miller trong vòng vài tuần nữa.

-- 11:30 - 13:00: Chúng ta sẽ có buổi ăn trưa tại Câu Lạc Bộ Doolittle Hall thuộc trường Air Force Academy.

-- 13:30 - 15:30: Thăm viếng trường Air Force Academy. Trường tọa lạc trên một diện tích rất rộng lớn 18,500 acres và vì vấn đề an ninh của khóa sinh, chúng ta có thể thăm viếng giới hạn một số các cơ sở của trường, các vị trong Ban Tổ Chức sẽ sắp xếp để các cựu Tiêu T-37 Việt Nam gặp gỡ các Sinh Viên Sĩ Quan gốc VN duệ hiện đang thụ huấn tại trường.

-- 17:00 - 22:00 Dạ Tiệc tại Marriott Hotel với vị diễn giả đặc biệt xuất thân tại Air Force Academy và đã thực hiện nhiều phi vụ các chiến trường Việt Nam.

VNAF-USAF Colorado Springs Reunion

All of us on the planning team (Curt Emery, Bill Newmiller, Tuan Nguyen and Gary Dehnel) are very excited about seeing all of you. Here is the latest information:

Directions. Go to maps (http://vnaf.info/Maps.aspx), you will find key maps to all events, directions from the airport to the hotel, to the Aviation Museum on Friday’s schedule, and to the Air Force Academy and Doolittle Hall where the Vietnam Memorial is located. Recommend you make copies of maps from the web site before you arrive.



Schedule. Go to schedule, you will see each day’s activities. In short:

§ Thursday. 5:00 PM, Reception and check in for the reunion at the Marriott, Aspen Leaf Room. Look for Tuan! You will receive your name tag, gift and for those needing special meals, tickets. Hot dogs/Hamburgers buffet style, weather permitting just outside the Aspen Leaf room, inclement weather, in the Aspen Leaf room. Dress: very casual.

§ Friday morning. Half of the attendees arrive at WWII Aviation Museum at 10 AM, second half at 12 PM. You will receive colored tickets which tell you whether you are in the first or second group. Plan on 25-30 minute travel time. Dress: tourist casual.

§ Friday dinner. 5:00 cocktails, 6:00 dinner. Sit down dinner at the Marriott in the salon area. There will be a quick welcome and updates to the schedule. Relax and spend time with old friends. Dress: casual, no jeans please.

§ Saturday morning. Travel to Doolittle Hall at the Air Force Academy. There is plenty of parking, the Memorial is to the north, recommend parking to the west in the large parking lot. There is a path to the Memorial, 5-minute walk. Several of us will be there to guide you. Please be in place at 9:00. Travel time, getting through the gate and walking to the Memorial, plan on 35-40 minutes. Arriving early will allow a few minutes to look around. There will be seating in the Plaza of Heroes which is part of the Memorial. There will be a presentation commencing at 9. Dress: nice casual (made that up!), nice pants and shirt for the men. We will honor, remember, those that were lost in Vietnam. After the presentation, you can tour the Memorial and grounds. At 1130, in Doolittle Hall, we will have an information briefing on the Air Force Academy. Following, we will have a sack lunch at Doolittle Hall. After lunch you can drive to visitors center, chapel and cadet area, recommend you make a copy of the map from the web site with directions from Doolittle Hall to the visitors center

§ Saturday Banquet. 5:00 cocktails, 6:25 take seats for dinner.
We will be in the same room as Friday night.
Dress: sport coat and open collar for guys, ladies as desired, a chance to dress up!
Colors will be posted, Tom Vo will sing both Vietnamese and US National Anthems.
We will have a speaker, a retired history professor from the Air Force Academy, who served in Vietnam.
There may be a stan/eval quiz.
There will be an empty table for memorabilia, bring pictures and other items to share. We will end with the opportunity to share memories.
Also, as was so enjoyable last reunion, during the banquet we will have time for short comments from the audience. Tell us about a poignant memory or an amusing memory of our days at SPS.

§ Sunday. You’re are on your own.

· Tourist information. The hotel has a concierge, a good source. The web site also has information. You will have time Friday to “play” tourist and a shorter window on Saturday afternoon. Here are a few suggestions:

o Drive to Garden of Gods, stop at the visitors’ center and then drive into the gardens and take a nice walk. There are beautiful rock formations, a great place for pictures.

o Take the cog rail to the top of Pikes Peak, rail is located in Manitou Springs, 25 minutes from the hotel. Important, you will need reservations, http://www.cograilway.com/reserve-now.asp.

o Drive to Old Colorado City, 15 minutes, very touristy but fun.

o Drive to Manitou Springs, 25 minutes, even more touristy, but more fun.

o Visit the Olympic Training Center, 1750 E Boulder Street. Colorado Spring is the home of the US Olympic committee, a number of the individual sports administrative offices are in the Springs.
