The Battle of Arnhem was a famous World War II battle fought in and around the Dutch towns of Arnhem, Oosterbeek, Wolfheze, Driel and the surrounding countryside from 17–26 September 1944.

The Allies (British & American and a small Polish freedom fighter force) launched Operation Market Garden on 17 September. If successful, the plan would open the door to Germany and hopefully force an end to the war in Europe by the end of the year (1944 instead of 1945).

British Field Marshal Montgomery's plan involved dropping the US 101st Airborne Division to capture key bridges around Eindhoven, the US 82nd Airborne Division to secure key crossings around Nijmegen, and the British 1st Airborne Division, with the Polish 1st Independent Parachute Brigade attached, to capture three bridges across the Rhine at Arnhem.

Failure to secure bridges over the Nederrijn, the British forces (the British 2nd Army, led by the British XXX Corp) were unable to advance further to reinforce the British 1St Airbone Division at Arnhem and the front line stabilized South of Arnhem. The British 1st Airborne Division had lost nearly three-quarters of its strength and did not see combat again.

The failure of Operation Market Garden during World War II, the Allied attempts to break through German lines and seize several bridges in the occupied Netherlands, including one at Arnhem, with the main objective of outflanking German defences in order to end the war by Christmas of 1944. The operation was made into the movie "A Bridge Too Far" in 1977, an epic war film based on the 1974 book of the same name by Cornelius Ryan.
