Claude Monet's home, famous garden and lily pond are located in the village of Giverny about 40 miles northwest of Paris. Monet lived and painted in the home and garden for 43 years. Today they are open to the public. It is absolutely beautiful especailly in the spring. It makes a great day trip out of Paris.

12,500+ photographs, 3,000+ miles driving, 250 miles hiked, and 500 hours later, I am very happy to present to you, Light Of The Night. A short film capturing just a small sample of the beautiful New England star filled landscapes. Putting this short film together has been one of the most incredible journeys I've yet to embark on. Traveling from place to place, hiking hundreds of miles of New England's trail systems, meeting a an awesome bunch of other photographers along the way, the lovely and unpredictable New England weather, and last but not least spending so much time under the stars, are the memories that I will remember for a life time.

Finally ready, the second part about the autumn colors here in Tokyo. For that film, I went to several parks with my friend Mayumi, who is a dancer here in Japan.
When we were shooting, the music was not decided yet, so she was just moving without music, inspired by the beauty of the nature, we have been surrounded by.
Later, I chose the classic song "autumn leaves", in the original and two pretty rare versions, sung by the japanese singer Shiina Ringo and Hildegard Knef, adding some orchestral parts and instruments of my own too.
The Shiina Ringo version sounds overdriven sometimes, but it is in the original CD-version too.
At least, I was often tempted to add more artistic effects ... but finally I decided to keep the most of the takes in natural colors. Hope, everybody enjoys watching it and special thanks to my friend Mayumi, who was a perfect add for that scenery.

Jerusalem is one of the oldest cities in the world. For the Jewish faith, it is the site of the Western Wall, the last remnant of the second Jewish Temple. For Christians, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre is the site of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. For Muslims, the Al-Aqsa Mosque is the third holiest Sanctuary of Islam.

Episode 1: Well-spring of holiness

Simon Sebag Montefiore delves into the past to explore how this unique city came into being, why it became such a sacred place for the three Abrahamic faiths; and how these faiths emerged from the Biblical tradition of the Israelites.

Starting with the Canaanites, Simon goes on a chronological journey to trace the rise of the city as a holy place and discusses the evidence for it becoming a Jewish city under King David. The programme explores the construction of the First Temple by Solomon through to the life and death of Jesus Christ and the eventual expulsion of the Jews by the Romans, concluding in the 7th Century AD, on the eve of the capture of Jerusalem by the Muslim Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab.

The village of Yvoire was once a fishing and boatmen’s medieval port overlooked the Lake Geneva (Lac Léman in French). It's stone houses with wooden balconies and its narrow streets decked with Wisteria and Geranium flowers.

The Shoes on the Danube Promenade is a memorial concept by filmdirector Can Togay and was created by him and the sculptor Gyula Pauer on the bank of the Danube River in Budapest. It honors the Jews who were killed by fascist Arrow Cross militiamen in Budapest during World War II. They were ordered to take off their shoes, and were shot at the edge of the water so that their bodies fell into the river and were carried away. It represents their shoes left behind on the bank.

The town of Savelletri is amazingly beautiful and so are the people. Savelletri is located on the Adriatic Sea in the Puglia region of Italy. The population is around 700 in town and I really got a wonderful sense of community while walking through the neighborhood. This video is a quick visual experience from an hour or so walk in town

Đảo Kangaroo, tức Kangaroo Island nằm cách thành phố Adelaide 112 cây số về hướng tây nam.

Kangaroo Island là hòn đảo lớn thứ ba của Úc sau tiểu bang Tasmania và Melville Island. Đảo Kangaroo có chiều dài 150 cây số, chiều ngang hẹp nhất là 57 cây số và chiều ngang rộng nhất là 90 cây số. Như thế diện tích của Kangaroo Island là 4 ngàn 405 cây số vuông. Điểm gần đất liền nhất từ đảo Kangaroo là Snapper Point cách vịnh Fleurieu Peninsula 13 cây số rưỡi.

Vào khoảng 16 ngàn năm trước, nhiều bộ lạc thổ dân đã từng sinh sống trên đảo này và mãi cho đến cách nay khoảng hai ngàn năm thì hòn đảo này trở thành một nơi hoang vắng vì thổ dân đã di tản hết vào trong đất liền.

Lý do là vì trước đây, con người vẫn thường qua lại bằng đường bộ trên một dải đất thấp nối liền đảo Kangaroo với tiểu bang Nam Úc ngày nay. Vào khoảng mười ngàn năm trước, sau khi thời kỳ băng giá cuối cùng biến mất, nước biển dâng cao làm ngập dải đất thấp này và cùng lúc tách rời đảo Kangaroo ra khỏi đất liền.

Những vật dụng làm bằng đá của các bộ lạc thổ dân cổ xưa sống trên đất liền, được tìm thấy sau này, mang dấu vết làm bằng đá trên đảo Kangaroo.

Khi nước biển dâng lên làm cho đảo Kangaroo bị cô lập, thổ dân đã từng gọi hòn đảo này là Karta – tức Hải Đảo của những kẻ chết.

Vào ngày 23 tháng 3 năm 1802, nhà thám hiểm người Anh Matthew Flinders, lúc ấy đang là thuyền trưởng con tàu Investigator của Hải quân Hoàng Gia Anh, đảm nhiệm trọng trách khảo sát địa hình và lập sơ đồ cho tất cả vùng duyên hải bao quanh nước Úc, đã phát giác ra hòn đảo này.

Ông đặt tên cho vùng đất này là đảo Kangaroo khi nhìn thấy vài chú kangaroo màu xám tại đây.

Theo sát sau tàu của thuyền trưởng Flinders là tàu Le Geographe, của thuyền trưởng và cũng là nhà thám hiểm người Pháp, Nicolas Baudin. Thuyền trưởng Baudin đặt chân lên đảo Kangaroo vào ngày 8 tháng 4 năm 1802.

Mặc dù Anh và Pháp lúc bấy giờ đang có chiến tranh với nhau, nhưng hai con tàu Investigator và Le Geographe đã không khai hoả mà cùng trao đổi tin tức và dữ kiện thâu thập được về các cuộc thám hiểm của nhau. Sau đó, thuyền trưởng Flinders chỉ cho thuyền trưởng Baudin đi về hướng một hòn đảo lớn gần đó để lấy thêm lương thực và nước uống.

Vào mùa hè 1802 – 1803, tức từ khoảng tháng 12, 1802 cho đến tháng 2, 1803, Baudin trở lại Kangaroo Island và đánh một vòng quanh đảo. Ông trở thành người Âu châu đầu tiên du hành vòng quanh đảo Kangaroo. Thuyền trưởng Baudin cũng đã lập bản đồ cho phần lớn các vùng duyên hải hiểm trở, đầy những ghềnh đá nhọn ở hướng nam và tây của hòn đảo. Và vì thế mà rất nhiều địa danh ở miền nam và miền tây của Kangaroo Island lại có tên Pháp như bãi biển Baudin, Cape du Couedic và Cape Bougeur.

Thuyền trưởng Nicolas Baudin đặt tên cho hòn đảo này là Ile Borda để tưởng nhớ đến một người Pháp nổi tiếng vừa là thuỷ thủ, vừa là một nhà toán học, vật lý học và nhà khoa học chính trị. Đó là Jean-Charles de Borda. (Xin nói thêm là trong lịch sử Pháp đã có năm con tàu được mang tên Borda để vinh danh ông).

Mặc dù Nam Úc là tiểu bang duy nhất không có tù nhân từ bên Anh gửi sang, Kangaroo Island lại là nơi ẩn náu của một số tội phạm trốn ra từ đất liền. Đến năm 1836 con thuyền đầu tiên chở những người định cư tự do mang tên Duke of York cặp bến Kangaroo Island. Và cũng từ đó trở đi, Kangaroo Island chính thức trở thành một phần của tiểu bang Nam Úc.

Chỉ có hai cách duy nhất để đặt chân lên đảo này là hoặc bằng đường hàng không hay đường biển. Trong hai loại phương tiện di chuyển ra đảo– tức máy bay hai động cơ hoặc phà – thì phương tiện chuyên chở được du khách ưa chuộng nhất là chuyến phà mang tên Sealink vì cuộc hải trình từ đất liền ra đảo bằng phà đầy tiện nghi và ngoạn mục.

Những người yêu thích biển sẽ rất thích đi phà. Vào ngày đẹp trời, mặt biển trong xanh thật đẹp và trên trời không một gợn mây, bầu trời xanh ngắt như tranh vẽ. Nếu may mắn hơn khách sẽ được nhìn thấy những con cá heo nhào lộn trên biển ngay trước mũi phà khiến cả chuyến phà xôn xao náo động hẳn lên khi cá heo xuất hiện.

Nếu du khách không có xe và sợ say sóng thì tốt nhất nên ra đảo bằng đường hàng không. Phi cơ sẽ hạ cánh ở phi trường Kingscote, thuộc thị trấn Kingscote, là thị trấn lớn nhất và cũng là trung tâm thương mại của đảo cũng như nơi đặt trụ sở hành chánh của Hội đồng thành phố Kangaroo Island. Giá mỗi chuyến bay từ Adelaide sang đảo, dù chỉ có khoảng 112 cây số nhưng lại có thể đắt bằng từ Adelaide đi Melbourne. Và khi đến Kingscote, du khách có thể mướn xe để đi lại trên đảo.

Nếu muốn đem xe nhà sang đảo (để có xe di chuyển) thì cách duy nhất là đi bằng phà. Hãng phà Sealink có hai con tàu, mỗi cuối ngày thì một chiếc đậu ở đất liền và chiếc kia đậu ở bên đảo. Sáng ra, chiếc phà bên đất liền sẽ khởi hành trước chiếc phà bên Kangaroo Island nửa giờ đồng hồ.

Trong những mùa ít du khách, Sealink có thể cho trẻ em từ 3 đến 14 tuổi đi miễn phí nếu có ít nhất hai người lớn đi cùng. Giá vé đi phà cho mỗi người lớn khá rẻ so với vé máy bay – chỉ có 47 úc kim một chiều. Tuy nhiên giá vé cho mỗi một chiếc xe nhà là 90 úc kim một chiều.

Nếu đi phà mà không mang theo xe, khách sẽ phải đi shuttle bus từ Adelaide đến Cape Jervis rồi mới lên phà. Từ Adelaide đến Cape Jervis mất khoảng 2 tiếng đồng hồ, tốn hết 26 Úc kim, và khi sang đến đảo khách sẽ không đi đâu được cả vì trên đảo không có phương tiện di chuyển công cộng. Cách duy nhất là phải mua thêm vé shuttle bus từ phà đến Kingscote và xuống đó mướn xe.

[Có một điều mà du khách đến Kangaroo Island phải để ý là nếu mướn xe ở Adelaide, cần xem kỹ các điều kiện mướn xe. Hầu như tất cả các hãng cho mướn xe đều có một kiện là “người mướn không được đem xe ra khỏi đất liền tức không được đem xe lên một hòn đảo nào đó nếu hòn đảo này không được nối với đất liền bằng một cây cầu”. Do đó, đem xe mướn sang Kangaroo Island bằng phà là vi phạm điều kiện mướn xe. Dĩ nhiên chúng ta vẫn có thể đem xe (mướn) đi qua phà nhưng lỡ có chuyện gì xảy ra, xe bị hư hỏng hay phà bị chìm thì hãng bảo hiểm sẽ không trả tiền bồi thường cho công ty cho mướn xe và do đó, người phải chịu hoàn toàn mọi chi phí chính là người ký tên trong giao kèo mướn xe.]

Trước khi đặt chân lên đảo, tất cả hành khách trên chuyến phà Sealink này đã có cơ hội tìm hiểu thêm về hệ sinh thái trên đảo Kangaroo và những khuyến cáo cần thiết nhằm bảo đảm cho hệ sinh thái và môi trường thiên nhiên của Kangaroo Island được duy trì trong tình trạng tinh khiết nhất.

Kangaroo Island là một địa điểm cắm trại rất hấp dẫn và được rất nhiều người đến đây cắm trại. Trước khi đem lều trại lên phà, du khách được khuyến khích rửa sạch vật dụng cắm trại để tránh đem theo mầm mống cỏ dại lên đảo làm huỷ hoại hệ sinh thái thực vật trên đảo.

Với diện tích khoảng 4 ngàn 4 trăm cây số vuông và dân số 4 ngàn 6 trăm người, tính ra trung bình mỗi người sống trên một mảnh đất với diện tích khoảng một ngàn cây số vuông, theo mật độ dân số vừa kể, Kangaroo Island là một nơi dân cư vô cùng thưa thớt.

Chỉ có các con đường chính ở mỗi thị trấn, những con đường ngay trước mặt nhà của người dân và các con đường chính như xa lộ chạy xuyên qua hòn đảo là được tráng nhựa. Còn lại đều là đường đất. Hội đồng địa phương không có tiền để tráng nhựa tất cả mọi con đường trên đảo.

Những con đường xuyên đảo, từ thị trấn này đến thị trấn khác thì chỉ có một lane mỗi chiều, tương tự như những con đường đi đến các thị trấn vùng quê hay xuyên tiểu bang; không có lane qua mặt ... (và có lẽ cũng không cần phải có lane qua mặt làm gì vì trên đoạn đường dài hai tiếng đồng hồ vỏn vẹn chỉ có vài chiếc xe qua lại). Hơn nữa người dân ở đây không ai trông có vẻ gì là vội vã cả.

Di chuyển từ thị trấn này đến thị trấn khác trên Kangaroo Island là những cuộc hành trình khá đơn độc trong một thời gian ngắn nhất là ba mươi phút.

Những ngôi nhà của người dân trên đảo Kangaroo trông rất sơ sài như nhà tiền chế. Dĩ nhiên bên cạnh đó cũng có những ngôi nhà bằng đá được cất từ lâu và những ngôi nhà lầu bằng gỗ, tuy nhiên tất cả đều có vẻ đơn giản không cầu kỳ như những ngôi nhà trong đất liền.

Hai bên đường, hoặc là những hàng cây khô cằn của vùng đầm lầy nước mặn, hai là ... chẳng có gì cả.

Trung tâm thương mại là các cửa tiệm tạp hoá bán những vật dụng cần thiết cho sinh hoạt hàng ngày. Bên cạnh đó là một vài tiệm ăn hay quán bia rượu, pharmacy, bưu điện, và trạm đổ xăng.

Tại Kingscote thì còn có một vài cửa tiệm bán quần áo, nữ trang và quà lưu niệm. Còn những nơi khác thì chỉ có mỗi một tiệm tạp hoá vừa bán các vật dụng căn bản và vừa bán xăng.

Người dân trên đảo Kangaroo rất hiền hoà chất phác – khác xa những người Âu châu đầu tiên đặt chân đến đảo này.

Những du khách vốn quen sống với tiện nghi vật chất thì khi đặt chân đến Kangaroo Island đều than rằng nơi đây thật hết sức nghèo nàn và thật là chán vì chẳng có gì để làm cả. Có tiền muốn đi shopping, mua sắm hay đi xem chiếu bóng cũng không có chỗ mà tiêu xài, trong khi đó thức ăn và xăng lại đắt vô cùng.

Khách có thể tự hỏi tại sao người dân ở đây và chính quyền địa phương lại có sự lựa chọn như thế?

Phải chăng chính quyền địa phương trên đảo Kangaroo tham nhũng (?) nên không còn tiền để tráng nhựa đường đi nữa? Nếu đây là một tỉnh thành ở Việt Nam thì có lẽ giả thuyết này đúng nhất và hợp thời nhất.

Có phải người dân sống trên đảo toàn là những người nghèo nên không có tiền mua sắm, do đó không có cửa tiệm hàng quán nhiều? Nếu đây là một khu vực ở Việt Nam thì giả thuyết này cũng đúng luôn.

Nhưng, nếu bảo rằng Kangaroo Island là một nơi nghèo nàn thì lầm to.

Kangaroo island là một nơi rất giàu có và có những thứ quý giá mà có tiền cũng không mua được.

Gần một nửa hòn đảo này vẫn còn trong tình trạng nguyên thuỷ, các khu rừng chưa bị con người đụng đến. Một phần tư của khu vực hoang dã này được bảo vệ trong các lâm viên quốc gia (national park) và lâm viên hoang dã (wild park) như Flinders Chase National Park, Seal Bay Conservation Park, Cape Bougeur Wilderness Protection Area.

Trên đảo Kangaroo có những tảng đá được nước và gió xoáy mòn thành những hình dạng vô cùng ngoạn mục. Nằm phơi nắng trên những bãi đá bên dưới chân núi dọc bờ biển là hàng trăm chú hải cẩu.

Cũng chính vì tình trạng cô lập giữa biển của Kangaroo Island mà các loại thú chuyên phá hoại môi trường như thỏ và cáo đã biến mất trên đảo. Hai loại thú này cũng không được phép đặt chân lên đảo. Nếu ai bị bắt gặp đem chúng sang đảo sẽ bị phạt tiền rất nặng.

Trên đảo Kangaroo cũng hầu như không có mèo hoang. Tất cả những con mèo nuôi trong nhà đều bắt buộc phải gắn microchip.

Những cư dân lâu đời nhất trên đảo và cũng là những cư dân được bảo vệ là các chú Kangaroo, những con kỳ đà sống trên cát – tức Rosenberg’s Sand Goanna, những con chuột hoang màu nâu đặc thù của Úc – Southern Brown Bandicoot, Tammar Wallaby, những con possum đuôi sù – brushtail possum, nhím mũi ngắn, hải cẩu có lông của Tân Tây Lan cùng với sáu loại ếch và dơi. Khi lái xe trên đường đi ngang những khu rừng hai bên đường, lâu lâu du khách lại gặp một chú nhím chầm chậm băng qua đường.

Bên cạnh đó là một số loại kangaroo, possum và koala khác được đem từ đất liền lên đảo và vì môi trường sinh thái rất thích hợp và lại được bảo vệ nên chúng đã sinh sản rất nhanh. Nhanh đến nỗi loại cây gum manna là loại koala thường ăn đã gần bị tuyệt chủng.

Trên đảo còn có vô số giống chim rất đẹp. khi đi dạo trong các công viên quốc gia, du khách tha hồ ngắm chim chóc nhảy nhót tự nhiên chung quanh mình.

Ở hướng bắc của đảo, người ta còn tìm được các sinh vật hoá thạch đến 500 triệu năm như tại Emu Bay Shale.

Nền kinh tế của Kangaroo Island sống nhờ vào chăn nuôi, nông nghiệp và ngư nghiệp.

Kangaroo Island là nơi cung cấp một phần lớn thịt bò và trừu, cộng với lông trừu cho tiểu bang Nam Úc. Trên mỗi chuyến phà Sealink đều có hai chiếc xe tải chở trừu. Chuyến đi tới đảo là các xe trống và khi trở lại đất liền thì chất đầy trừu trên đó.

Gần đây, Kangaroo Island còn trồng thêm khoai tây và hạt canola.

Đảo Kangaroo cũng là nơi sản xuất rượu nho và mật ong rất nổi tiếng. Trên đảo có tất cả 26 hầm rượu.

Khi lên đảo, du khách được yêu cầu tránh không đem theo mật ong hoặc ong từ đất liền vì ong và mật ong từ đất liền có thể đem theo những loại côn trùng nguy hiểm huỷ hoại kỹ nghệ làm mật ong trên đảo. Mật ong của Kangaroo Island do ong mật Liguria tạo ra. (Liguria là tên một thị trấn ven biển nằm ở hướng tây bắc của Ý đại lợi, giáp ranh với Pháp).

Hào (oyster) và tôm hùm (lobster) sống dưới các ghềnh đá của Kangaroo Island là hai loại hải sản nổi tiếng ngon và được cả nước Úc ưa chuộng.

Và kỹ nghệ cuối cùng của đảo Kangaroo cũng đang phát triển không ngừng là kỹ nghệ du lịch. Hàng năm có khoảng 180 ngàn người đến đảo viếng cảnh.

Với dân số ít ỏi và thưa thớt, cộng với lối sống đơn giản và gần gũi thiên nhiên của người dân, môi trường thiên nhiên của Kangaroo Island không bị con người dẫm nát. Thú vui của người dân ở đây là tắm biển và câu cá thay vì đi xem cine và shopping.

Nếu ai đã từng đến đảo Kangaroo thì đều thấy ngay những bãi biển tuyệt đẹp, chỉ cần một ngôi nhà nhỏ nhìn ra biển là đủ thấy hạnh phúc.

Với quyết định chỉ tráng nhựa những con đường chính hoặc thật cần thiết cho sinh hoạt hàng ngày, đảo Kangaroo ít bị ô nhiễm, không bị tiến trình kỹ nghệ hoá của con người làm hư hại môi trường thiên nhiên.

Trở lại với câu hỏi là tại sao chính phủ không xây một câu cầu nối liền đảo Kangaroo với Nam Úc? Nhiều người cho rằng, phí tổn di chuyển hàng hoá từ đảo lên đất liền hiện nay khá tốn kém và không tiện lợi. Bao nhiêu là kỹ nghệ trên đảo đều phải dựa vào các chiếc phà, những ngày mưa gió lớn và thời tiết xấu thì hàng hoá coi như bị ứ đọng, không đi đâu được cả.

Do đó khi mua vé phà sang Kangaroo Island, nếu đi trong những mùa thường có thời tiết xấu gây biển động thì du khách nên mua bảo hiểm du lịch vì phà có thể không chạy và nếu bị hủy vì thời tiết xấu thì tiền vé sẽ không được bồi hoàn. (Bên cạnh đó, kế hoạch du lịch sẽ bị lỡ dở, du khách còn bị mất tiền đã book khách sạn và các chuyến đi tour nếu không có bảo hiểm du lịch). Nếu có bảo hiểm du lịch thì sẽ được bồi thường hết tất cả những chi phí này, trừ thứ duy nhất không thể bảo hiểm và lấy lại được là thời gian.

Những người tranh đấu bảo vệ cho môi trường thiên nhiên của Kangaroo Island thì cho rằng không có một chiếc cầu nối liền Nam Úc và đảo là điều vô cùng thuận lợi cho môi trường thiên nhiên. Nhờ sự tách biệt này mà đảo Kangaroo không bị sự xâm nhập của côn trùng, cỏ dại, và quan trọng nhất là sự xâm lấn và dày xéo đất đai của con người, kẻ thù nguy hiểm nhất của thiên nhiên.

Thiếu điều kiện qua lại dễ dàng, con người sẽ ngại không muốn sống trên đảo, nhờ vậy mật độ dân số trên đảo được bảo đảm duy trì ở mức thấp nhất và do đó bảo vệ được môi trường thiên nhiên tại đây.

Đảo Kangaroo là một trong những môi trường sinh thái hoang dã lành mạnh nhất thế giới vì những công dân yêu thích thiên nhiên và hết lòng bảo vệ thiên nhiên sinh sống tại đây.

Điều đáng nói nhất là trong suốt hành trình từ đầu đến đuôi Kangaroo Island, người viết không hề nhìn thấy một cọng rác nào cả. (Không như cuộc hành trình bằng xe lửa từ Đà Nẵng vào Saigon, trên xe đầy rác và khi nhìn thấy nhân viên hoả xa đi dọn rác thì chưa kịp mừng thầm rằng Việt Nam nay đã khá hơn một chút, niềm vui chưa kịp nở thành nụ cười thì chứng kiến tận mắt nhân viên hoả xa này mở cửa sổ xe lửa và vứt bọc rác ra ngoài!).

Nếu con người ở khắp nơi biết sống đơn giản và gần gũi với thiên nhiên hơn thì trái đất này sẽ tồn tại thêm một thời gian dài hơn.

Đối với đất nước Việt nam chúng ta, người viết không dám cầu mong điều lớn lao là thiên nhiên được bảo vệ mà chỉ ước mong sao khi đối xử với nhau, người dân trong nước có được một phần nhỏ tấm lòng thương mến và bảo vệ nhau như người dân sống trên Đại Thử Đảo đối với thiên nhiên.

Many people who haven't been to Japan think it's this great country where everything is perfect like in a fairy tail. I wish to inform people of the realities of living in Japan, and although it is a nice place to live it is good to have a realistic view of life in Japan if you are considering living here some day.

Today's topic is about food. One of the bad points about food in Japan is that it is very expensive. When you go out to eat a restaurant you only get a small portion of food and you pay a lot of money. The Japanese diet is lower in calories than the American diet, so if you're eating a restaurant you are often going to feel frustrated with the small amount of food you get after paying so much at a restaurant.

Everything comes in small quantities here, even in supermarkets. Sizes are different. For example the American S size is the same as the Japanese L size when it comes to drinks. Fruit is prohibitively expensive. Watermelons cost upwards of 25 dollars per melon and mangos are really expensive too. There are also a lot of foods that you may feel you need, but you won't be able to find this easily here, or if you do find them they will be very expensive. It's hard to find dairy products here in Japan that Westerners are used to eating. Life is tough when you have to adapt your diet in such a major way.

Bruno's Sculpture Garden in Marysville, Victoria in Southeastern Australia

The original and unique artworks of sculptor and painter Bruno Torfs continues to bring joy and inspiration to visitors from all over the world. Nestled amongst the luscious rainforest setting lives a collection of unforgettable characters lovingly hand crafted by Bruno from clay and fired onsite in his kiln.

Bruno has created a world rich with fantasy and insightful beauty derived from his imagination and inspired by his intrepid journeys to some the world most intriguing and remote regions.

Unfortunately on the 7th of February 2009 a bushfire raged through the township, decimating everything in its path without mercy and claimed the lives of our friends and neighbours indiscriminately. Bruno was extremely lucky to survive and the rest of the family are safe and well.

Bruno has chosen to stay in Marysville to rebuild his home and restore the gardens. Brunos passion to share his love of art and the story of life with the world has not been damaged by the fires, in fact you would almost say it has been forged anew by the flames that nearly took it all away.

Bruno's home and art gallery were unfortunately completely destroyed in the blaze. The main attraction, the sculpture garden, has also been damaged, but around sixty percent of the sculptures have survived.

Ayano Tsukimi (64) is living in Nagoro, a village in eastern Iya on Shikoku, one of the four main islands of Japan. Not many people are still living there. For those who die or move away, Ayano Tsukimi is making lifesized dolls in their liking and puts them in places that were important to them. The dolls are scattered around the whole valley.

The city itself is also featured in Gaudi's magnificent fantasies. The Palau Güell was treated to an ostentatious roof with a great array of air shafts and chimneys. But the sight that captures the imagination of most who see it is the amazing façade of the Casa Mila, a unique apartment block without equal. Not a single wall is straight, glass and plaster were used for its façade and colourful ornamental ceramics complete the work.

Barcelona is a melting pot that ranges from Gothic to Modernism, a veritable explosion of joie de vivre and creativity.

LTS: Tác giả viết đoản khúc này trong chuyến đi thuyết trình tại Đại hội Liên ngành Quốc tế với chủ đề “Tha Thứ” (Probing Boundaries: Forgiveness) tại Salburg, Vương quốc Áo vào tháng 3, 2008. Tác giả là người Việt duy nhất góp mặt trong ba ngày Đại hội, với bài nói về kinh nghiệm chiến tranh của người Việt tại quê nhà và hải ngoại qua các phỏng vấn lịch sử truyền khẩu. Ban Tổ Chức đã chọn bài này để đăng trong tuyển tập chuyên đề “Tha Thứ” được xuất bản tại Anh Quốc sau đó.

Gặp gỡ một dòng sông

Hình như thành phố cổ nào cũng nương theo một dòng sông. Huế, Việt Nam, có dòng Hương Giang thơ mộng. Luân Đôn, Vương Quốc Anh, có dòng sông Thames êm đềm. Roma, Ý Đại Lợi, có dòng Tevere lặng lẽ. Bonn, Cộng Hòa Liên Bang Đức, sinh quán của Beethoven, có dòng Rhine mênh mang. Paris, thành phố ánh sáng, dĩ nhiên mệnh danh với dòng Seine lãng mạn. New York, tuy không được coi là ‘cổ’ trong lịch sử thế giới, cũng có dòng Hudson bàng bạc. Và những thành phố cổ khác đều tọa lạc bên cạnh những dòng nước.

Có một thành phố cổ, tuy không được biết đến một cách quen thuộc như những đại danh Paris hay Luân Đôn, cũng chảy bên một dòng sông trong một quốc gia tí hon. Salzburg, với con sông chính là dòng Salzach chảy vào cả Đức Quốc, là một trong những thành phố du lịch rất phong phú về lịch sử của Vương quốc Áo. Vì là một thành phố nhỏ trong một quốc gia nhỏ, nên du khách chỉ có thể đến Salzburg trên những chuyến bay hàng không dân dụng nội địa từ những nước lân bang, chứ không thể đáp những chuyến bay quốc tế trực tiếp từ các châu lục khác như khi đến những thành phố lớn ở Châu Âu.

Mạch nguồn của sông Salzach khởi đi từ Kitzbühel Alps, tuôn về hướng Đông cho đến Schwarzach im Pongau thì xoay về hướng Bắc và xuyên qua thành phố Hallein và Salzburg. Con sông này tạo nên biên giới giữa Bavaria, nước Đức, và nước Áo trong khoảng 70 km. Cũng giống như thành phố Salzburg, dòng sông Salzach có cái khiêm nhu và e ấp của nó. Nhìn từ trên không, Salzach như một con lạch tí hon len lỏi giữa trùng điệp của dãy núi Alps. Dài 225 km, Salzach chiết mạch từ dòng sông Inn, và tên nó có nghĩa là Sông Muối. Tên ‘muối cơm’ này là bởi vì mãi cho đến thế kỷ thứ 19, sinh hoạt chuyển tải muối dọc con sông này là một phần chính của nền kinh tế địa phương. Khi hỏa xa được khai mở trong vùng, thì việc vận chuyển bằng đường thủy bị mai một đi.

Tiếng tăm, mắm muối…

Lần đầu tiên tôi gặp một người đến từ Áo, là khi tôi sống tại chung cư sinh viên Lappis của Đại học Stockholm ở Thụy Điển năm 2005. Tuy có nhiều sinh viên thông thạo tiếng bản xứ, nhưng vì các viện đại học Thụy Điển tạo điều kiện cho du sinh từ khắp nơi trên thế giới theo học tại quốc gia này, nên tiếng Anh là ngôn ngữ chung. Đa phần, các sinh viên trong chung cư trao đổi với nhau qua tiếng Anh, trừ phi họ có bạn bè đồng hương. Anh sinh viên người Áo ấy không có ‘họ hàng’ như các sinh viên khác đến từ quốc gia láng giềng của Thụy Điển như Đức hay Liên Xô, nhưng anh lại thường trò chuyện bằng tiếng Đức với các sinh viên người Đức. Tôi đâm ra thắc mắc tại sao người Áo không có ngôn ngữ riêng của họ. Khi tôi hỏi, thì người bạn của tôi chỉ bảo, “Người Áo nói tiếng Đức.” Đơn giản như thế. Có lẽ anh ấy sợ nếu lôi cả lịch sử ra để giải thích thì sẽ rắc rối dài dòng lắm…

Còn có nhiều điều tôi thắc mắc về nước Áo, vì một lần đến chỉ là cưỡi ngựa xem hoa. Khi ở Salburg, tuy được ban tổ chức của đại hội chiêu đãi những món ăn trứ danh của dân tộc Áo, nhưng tôi vẫn thấy khó thưởng thức. Nghĩ mãi, tôi mới nhận ra: thì ra thức ăn ở đây không chỉ đậm đà, mà còn rất mặn mà. Thật không sai: đến thành muối, thì ẩm thực cũng mặn hơn ở nơi khác. Salzburg thật không hổ với cái tên “muối cơm” của mình…

Giai điệu hạnh phúc

Đối với Hollywood hay những ai yêu thích thế giới điện ảnh, thì Salzburg là ‘quê hương’ của phim nhạc “Giai điệu hạnh phúc” (The Sound of Music) lừng danh. Nhưng đối với dân bản xứ, giai điệu hạnh phúc đối với họ là dòng nhạc Mozart. Cậu quý tử của thành phố Baroque này hiện hữu hầu như khắp nơi ở Salzburg. Từ những hòn chocolate có chân dung của ông, cho đến tượng đài cao ngất trong quảng trường của phố cổ trước bảo tàng viện Salzburg, nhà soạn nhạc cổ điển này góp phần định nghĩa chỗ đứng của nơi chôn nhau cắt rốn của mình trên bản đồ thế giới.

Phố cổ của Salzburg nằm uốn theo dòng sông Salzach với quảng trường thênh thang nằm kề bảo tàng viện, nơi mà người ta sẽ bắt gặp âm điệu Mozart lả lướt trong không gian khi vừa bước qua ngưỡng cửa. Những tiệm đồ lưu niệm trưng bán những món hàng thủ công làm bằng tay từ nhiều nơi ở Châu Âu. Từ những đôi guốc gỗ đế cao Hòa Lan, cho đến những mộc phẩm điêu khắc từ gỗ bạch dương của Bắc Âu, những món hàng tại bảo tàng viện mách cho du khách về thị hiếu mỹ thuật của người dân bản xứ. Trên tầng hai của quầy hàng lưu niệm là những sạp vải và phòng may đặc biệt cung cấp vải sợi truyền thống của Áo, và phục vụ những ai có nhu cầu may y phục cổ truyền.

Người dân Salzburg rất tự hào về lịch sử địa phương của họ, và về một thời lẫy lừng vùng đất này trực thuộc bảo quyền của Hoàng Đế. Trước đây, Salzburg được cai quản bởi các Tổng Giám Mục, kết hợp mật thiết đời sống dân gian cả đạo lẫn đời. Sau Đệ nhị thế chiến, Salzburg trở thành một trong những trung tâm thương mại của Áo. Mệnh danh là “hòn ngọc Baroque,” phố cổ Salzburg sánh vai với Lâu Đài Schönbrunn là hai địa danh được UNESCO ấn chọn vào danh sách Di Sản Văn Hóa và Thiên Nhiên Thế Giới trên toàn lãnh thổ Áo. Nhưng niềm tự hào lớn nhất có lẽ vẫn là danh tài Mozart. Khi đi quanh khu phố cổ, ta lại được nhắc nhở một lần nữa về niềm kiêu hãnh này, đặc biệt tại ngôi nhà triển lãm nơi chôn nhau cắt rốn của ông. Sinh năm 1756, Mozart đã được coi là ái tử vĩ đại nhất của Áo. Năm 1842, tượng đài của ông đã sừng sững mọc lên và ngự trị tại quãng trường này cho đến ngày hôm nay.

Tôi cho rằng giai điệu hạnh phúc của Salzburg là dòng nhạc Mozart, vì ở nơi đây, tinh hoa âm nhạc của ông được nâng niu và trân quý. Thật phúc thay cho những vùng đất có những người con tài ba lỗi lạc, để có di sản mà lưu truyền từ thế kỷ này sang thế kỷ khác, và thi thố với thế giới. Nhưng phúc hơn cho những danh nhân có được một nơi để gọi là nhà. Tôi chạnh lòng nghĩ đến những vĩ nhân Việt Nam. Có rất nhiều người trong số họ mang kiếp lưu vong – liệu ai sẽ là người tưởng nhớ họ, đâu sẽ là mảnh đất ưu ái gọi họ là những đứa con yêu dấu?

Những điều răn cho du khách

Có điều cấm, cũng có điều khuyên. Tuy nhiên, có nhiều tổ chức cảm thấy cần phải mang thi vị trở lại với những chuyến viếng thăm Salzburg, đã khuyến cáo du khách về những điều không nên làm. Đây là những khuyến cáo rất thực tế cho những du khách lần đầu đến đây. Chẳng hạn, không nên mua kẹo viên chocolate với hình Mozart trong khu trung tâm thành phố. Giá cả sẽ rất ‘cao cấp.’ Không nên đi theo đoàn, vì sẽ làm mất đi không khí nhẹ nhàng êm ả của nơi này. Nên mua thức ăn bên mạn phải của dòng sông, vì giá cả ở đây sẽ nhẹ nhàng hơn (gần Lâu đài Maribell). Tránh mua thức ăn ở Augustinerbräu tại Mülln, mà nên vào các siêu thị gần đó để mua và mang theo. Những ‘điều răn’ khác cũng xoay quanh mục đích giúp cho du khách có một chuyến thăm thú vị và lịch lãm. Và dĩ nhiên, không nên dung túng những người phục vụ thiếu lễ độ tại các nhà hàng lộ thiên.

Một trong những điều được lập lại trong các tài liệu về Salzburg, là lịch sử diệt chủng và bài học Hitler, như một sự nhắc nhở chung cho lương tâm nhân loại. Có nhiều trang nhà cũng đề nghị du khách dừng chân ở một nơi yên tĩnh để hồi tâm về những trang sử đen tối nhất của nhân loại, và quyết tâm không cho phép những trang sử này được lập lại. Giữa cái lạnh của trời đêm, đứng nhìn dòng nước lặng lờ trôi, tôi chợt nghĩ, không biết những ám khí của một thời tăm tối như thời diệt chủng Hitler, sẽ đến bao giờ mới khuất? Đấy là chuyện đã qua còn như thế. Còn những tăm tối vẫn chưa qua thì sao? Tôi chưa thấy ai đề nghị du khách đến Việt Nam dừng chân lắng lòng tìm về cội nguồn lịch sử và tang thương chiến tranh. Thật là một điều lạ lùng, bởi vì trong lịch sử thế giới, chưa có quốc gia nào phải chịu cam qua nhiều như Việt Nam: mười lăm thế kỷ chiến chinh. Bao vong linh đã phải đá nát vàng phai dưới tên bay đạn lạc?

Mua món đồ gì cũng phải trả giá xuống thấp nhiều vì người bán nói thách rất cao. Áo da trừu (sheepskin leather coat) ở chợ bán rẽ hơn những chổ chuyên môn làm đồ da (leather factory), màu sắc thì không đầy đủ như ở factory... Nhưng đồ da trong factory vẫn rẽ hơn những cửa tiệm trong shopping mall bên Mỹ.

Đừng thấy thảm đủ màu, đủ loại mà ham mua ngay những tấm thảm trong những factory làm thảm bên Turkey. Phải trả giá thật nhiều vì tụi nó nói thách trên trời dưới đất, giá cách biệt mấy ngàn dollars một tấm. Đôi khi những chổ bán thảm Persian, Turkey (thật) bên Mỹ, có On Sale, giá lại rẽ hơn mua ở Turkey.

Mount Fuji (富士山 Fujisan?, IPA: [ɸɯᵝꜜdʑisaɴ] ( listen)), located on Honshu Island, is the highest mountain in Japan at 3,776.24 m (12,389 ft).[1] An active stratovolcano[5][6] that last erupted in 1707–08, Mount Fuji lies about 100 kilometres (60 mi) south-west of Tokyo, and can be seen from there on a clear day. Mount Fuji's exceptionally symmetrical cone, which is snow-capped several months a year, is a well-known symbol of Japan and it is frequently depicted in art and photographs, as well as visited by sightseers and climbers.

Mount Fuji is one of Japan's "Three Holy Mountains" (三霊山 Sanreizan?) along with Mount Tate and Mount Haku. It is also a Special Place of Scenic Beauty and one of Japan's Historic Sites.[7] It was added to the World Heritage List as a Cultural Site on June 22, 2013.[8] As per UNESCO, Mount Fuji has “inspired artists and poets and been the object of pilgrimage for centuries”. UNESCO recognizes 25 sites of cultural interest within the Mt. Fuji locality. These 25 locations include the mountain itself, Fujisan Hongū Sengen Shrine and six other Sengen shrines, two lodging houses, Lake Yamanaka, Lake Kawaguchi, the eight Oshino Hakkai hot springs, two lava tree molds, the remains of the Fuji-kō cult in the Hitoana cave, Shiraito Falls, and Miho no Matsubara pine tree grove.[9]

We also look at some of the unique foods made from cherry blossoms at Yoshinoyama: ice cream, yokan, sushi and sakura liquor.

Knowing the cherry blossoms (sakura) is to know Japan itself. Their beauty comes quickly and is short lived -- falling from the tree after only 10 days. The samurai lived knowing their life would be short, and that spirit is in each cherry blossom.
Called "mono no aware" which is deeply rooted in Buddhism, Japanese have a strong connection to all things. The beauty felt for the sakura is deep. Mono no aware is also an important factor in how Japanese connect to manga, anime and things important to them.

The biggest hot spring resort in Japan:
Beppu is a city in Oita Prefecture, where there are the most hot springs and rate of water flowing out of the hot-spring source in Japan. It is one of the typical hot spring resorts of Japan. Every hot spring has its unique characteristic which is called Jigoku(Hell), a tour around these hot springs is a highlight of Beppu Onsen Resort. Beppu is a big city in Oita Prefecture, so it is convenient to reach, therefore it is good place to experience Japanese hot springs. Hot spring area is divided into eight districts which are called Beppu Hachiyu. Guidelines are available at the tourism information center of Beppu Station.

Land of Frankincense (Trầm Hương)

Frankincense is an aromatic resin used in incense and perfumes, obtained from trees of the genus Boswellia.

Frankincense is tapped from the scraggy but hardy trees by slashing the bark, which is called striping, and allowing the exuded resin to bleed out and harden. These hardened resins are called tears. There are several species and varieties of Frankincense trees, each producing a slightly different type of resin. Tapping is done two to three times a year with the final taps producing the best tears due to their higher aromatic content.

There are four main species of Boswellia that produce true Frankincense. Resin from each of the four is available in various grades. The grades depend on the time of harvesting; the resin is hand-sorted for quality.

The more opaque resins are the best quality. Fine resin is produced in Somalia, from which the Roman Catholic Church purchases most of its stock

It took us almost a year to generate a well-planned journey. We come from the two different countries, Vietnam and Australia, to join in this meaningful one-month itinerary. In the first place, the departure started from the attractive capital city of Nepal, Kathmandu towards the Mt. Everest Base Camp as well as Potala Place and nearby legendary monasteries in Tibet.
Our group had been through the toughness of 50 Chinese check-points along the way in Tibet, where China’s armies are located. For this reason, no cameras or any electronic recording devices are allowed to be use in most area . In this case, in order to stay away from complications,sometimes we were unable to take photos or filming.




Equally important, we have acknowledged that the internal political situation in Tibet is unstable. People set themselves on fire in the strikes as they want to have their self-governing. Because of this extremely negative state of affairs, it was impossible for us to make it to the other areas around Tibet …

Tôi đi Turkey năm 2000, ghé Istanbul và thủ đô Ankara và sau đó đi theo đường "Silk Road" bằng tour bus (con đường ngày xưa khi thương lái dùng lạc đà để đi mua bán, trao đổi hàng hóa, chủ yếu là các gia vị (spices) giữa các xứ lân cận). Turkey là một xứ nhiều màu sắc với những di tích lịch sử pha trộn của nền văn minh Âu Á lâu đời.

Muốn trở lại Turkey lần nữa nhưng bận rộn và tình hình an ninh trong vùng không biết ra sao, nên chưa dám đi. Rủi xui, gặp ISIS hay đám radical Muslim nào nó bắt, thấy là "US citizen" và Catholic, nó bắt treo lên đóng đinh trên cây thì tiêu đời giai hơi già già...

Định năm tới nếu tình hình an ninh cho phép, chắc book đi một lần nữa, đi về phía khác chưa đi vì Turkey rộng lớn, có nhiều di tích và thành phố lạ chưa đến. Nhưng bây giờ dịch Corona virus đang bùng phát, lan tràn khắp nơi nên không biết bao giờ mới đi được

Turkey có bán sò mussel, bên trong nhồi chút cơm có tẩm gia vị, mussel tươi ngọt, cơm thơm lại béo béo, ăn ngon giá lại rẽ, chổ nào cũng có bán, như món "snack" để ăn chơi

Tui hảo ngọt (nghĩa đen 100%) nên khi đến Thổ Nhỉ Kỳ (Turkey), tui thích "Turkish Delight", một món kẹo với nhiều hương vị khác nhau... Tui thích Turkish delight với pistachios hay Turkish delight làm bằng mật ong!
