Giành Tự Do, Dân Chủ với Nhân Quyền

The Tale About “Victory”

Mistakenly, I was born after the great day that’s called “Liberation,”
And I’ve grown year after year when my country’s being in “Peacetime.”
But why did our lives turn out to be terribly miserable and subjected to all sorts of persecution,
As a petty peddler, my mother worked hard from dawn to dusk for food feeding her little child.
On the way to school, I got to go across a droughty burnt-grass meadow,
Under the sky sadly covering a silvery cloud and having not a wind blow.
When I went back home, the evening sun was still shining flickeringly,
-“I’m so hungry, oh mom, it’s about dusky!”

And I still felt hungry when I was going to school the next day morning,
My teacher told me that I ought to revere uncle Ho.
I asked her: -“Please let me know who is that ‘uncle’?”
She said: -“Thanks to ‘uncle’,
A great ‘victory’ our party has been winning!”

I didn’t know anything, but quietly I kept my head bowing,
In the depth of my heart, my worrisome kept stirring endlessly.
“Victory” was it really?
Why my life tumbled down into destitution,
Our home was coercively taken, and we were driven away toward the so-called “new economic zone” that’s simply an abandoned and deserted region!

Thirty years went by as I grew up, but our life were unchanged likely:
The sky above my country still covered the same silvery cloud sadly,
A day liked everyday; always we kept living our unfortunate lives miserably,
A little change instead, I replaced my mom working as a peddler for our needs daily.

What if the (communist) party had not won that “Victory,” I wondered,
Vietnam, our country, would it have been lagging behind like this?
Grass-roots people wouldn’t have to swallow some bitter pills
When lot of them were exported to many foreign countries around the world as slave labors.

-“Who’s the real enemy? ”I wondered whisperingly:
“Mỹ, Ngụy”(*), “uncle Ho,” or the Communist Party?
But “Ngụy” today was fondly pampered and compared to their oversea “lovely good siblings,”
And “Mỹ” was now revered as their economic benefactor, or their king.

Vietnam has been retrograded from one generation to another,
From badly polluted environment to strangely unethical behavior.
Government and party leadership were likely a horde of chimpanzees,
They were mostly selfish, who gave away their people and their country.

The whole society has been going downhill very quickly,
“Absolute power corrupts absolutely,”
Government officials were abusing their functions to bribe and rob everyone’s property.
Powerless ordinary citizens ’s complaints piled up, but they didn’t take any consideration preferably.

Uncle’s ruling party creatively led our country backward from bad to worse,
Vietnamese people were said the poorest in comparison with other ones around the world.
All ancient magnificence, where they are nowadays,
Some Vietnamese women sacrificed themselves venturing in different shameful businesses faraway.

Oh dear Vietnam, my lovely country,
Oh dear heroic compatriots, stand up please!
Let’s fight for freedom, democracy, and human rights,
Set up your mind to overthrow our inner adversary: the communists.

When the communist slavery is over, our Vietnamese sky will be dazzlingly bright,
Offspring of Hồng Lạc Ancestor please stand up higher!
Rebuilding our nation, safeguarding our land and sea border,
The common “Victory” will come to the whole people at the right time.

(*) According to VC propaganda terminology:
“Mỹ” referred to American advisors, and military units.
“Ngụy” referred to RVN/ Gov. officials & Mil.officers.
