Cost of a 30-second Super Bowl ad this year is mind-blowing

The companies that will be featured during commercial breaks while we all watch Super Bowl LII paid a king’s ransom for the right to advertise their wares. That’s nothing new. But you’ll be stunned to find out just how much a 30-second Super Bowl ad costs this year.

According to Ashley Rodriguez of qz.com, each 30-second ad for Super Bowl LII, which is being broadcast on NBC, costs $6 million. Keep this in mind when you watch Budweiser’s 60-second ad about water, rather than beer, and will cost $12 million.

Per the report, a huge reason why ads cost so much now is that so many more people have cut the cord. So, the opportunities to get your product out there to the masses have shrunk significantly.

“So much of media is fragmenting into smaller and smaller audiences,” says Tim Calkins, professor of marketing at the Kellogg School of Management. “If you want to reach a lot of people, really the only way you can do it is on the Super Bowl…. It has the lovely combination of a big audience and a group of people that want to listen to the advertising and that makes it so valuable.”

As we know, the Super Bowl is the most-watched event on television every single year. Last year’s Super Bowl was watched by 111 million people, per the report, which was the fifth most-watched broadcast in television history. For perspective, the next-biggest event last year was the Oscars, which reportedly was seen by 33 million viewers.

That’s the power of the NFL. Which, as we’ve delved into recently, is most certainly not in as much trouble as some would have you believe in terms of viewership and interest.

Super Bowl ticket prices soar for Patriots-Eagles, could be most expensive on record

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. --- The Minnesota Vikings aren’t playing in the Super Bowl, not that one could tell from the ticket prices for Sunday’s game at the team’s home stadium.

The game could end up being the most expensive Super Bowl on the secondary ticket market since major sites like StubHub, SeatGeek and TicketIQ began tracking prices over the last decade.

The average price for a ticket sold on StubHub as of Tuesday afternoon was $5,415, in excess of $1,000 more than the average price of the most expensive Super Bowl tracked (Super Bowl 50 between the Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos).

“I think there was a thought as soon as the Vikings lost that there’d be a huge dip, but there’s still been high demand,” StubHub spokesperson Cameron Papp told USA TODAY Sports. “The Eagles fans have surprised us.”

Purchases from Pennsylvania make up 14% of the tickets bought for the Super Bowl on StubHub. Buyers located in Massachusetts make up 11%. On SeatGeek, 18% of the purchasers are from the Philadelphia area with the Boston area making up 11%.

StubHub had more than 2,000 tickets available as of Tuesday, slightly less than were on the market at this point last year. The number of tickets available on the secondary market has dipped at recent Super Bowls as the NFL has allotted more tickets to On Location Experiences, the league’s hospitality company that sells tickets bundled with concerts and other events.

Prices dipped more than 30% in the hours after the Vikings were eliminated, although the average listing price on sites like TicketIQ, SeatGeek and TickPick actually have increased this week to about $7,000.

The cheapest seat available on the ticket sites, known as the get-in price, was about $3,500 on Tuesday. The cheapest seat sold on StubHub went for $2,350 with the most expensive seat purchased so far at $22,000.

StubHub has one seat listed (before fees) going for $279,000 for a turf suite.
