WARNING AREA 51: What is it? Where is it? Does it even exist? What is the United States Government hiding something from us? If anything at all....

Area 51 - The Whole Story:

The name Area 51 has become well known within UFO folklore, almost as well known as Roswell and Brentwaters. But what is Area 51, what's its purpose, it's history and where is it?
Every weekday morning, at least 500 people arrive at a guarded terminal owned by a company called EG&G on the Northwest side of McCarran Airport in Las Vegas, Nevada. Here they board one of a small fleet of unmarked Boeing 737s. Using the name "Janet" as their callsign's, these 737's fly off North every half-hour.
Their destination is Groom Lake, also known as Area 51, located 90 miles North West of Las Vegas, an installation so secret, its existence is denied by the government agencies and contractors that have connections there. By late 1955, the facility had been completed for flight testing of Lockheed's U-2 spyplane, codenames AQUATONE.
Since that time, Groom Lake has undergone vast expansion, catering to the needs of testing the most advanced aircraft projects in the world. Forty-four years after it was created, Groom Lake has hosted flight testing of the aforementioned Lockheed U-2, the SR-71 Blackbird, the F-117 Stealth Fighter, Northrop's B-2 Stealth Bomber, the mysterious Aurora Project, and possibly even alien spacecraft.
The Groom Lake facility has been known by many names since its construction. Kelly Johnson named the place "Paradise Ranch". When his flight-test team arrived in July 1955; they simply called it "The Ranch". In fact, the secret base was formally named Watertown Strip, after the town in upstate New York where CIA director Allen Dulles was born. In June 1958, it was officially designated Area 51 by the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). The adjacent AEC proving grounds became known as the Nevada Test Site and divided into such numbered areas. The base is now known world-wide as "Area 51" (Thanks To Numerous Mentions In Hollywood Shows And Movies), though officially this designation was dropped in the 1970s.

The base has also been called many other names such as Dream Land, The Farm, Saddle Mountain Test Sight (Official Name) and of course Groom Lake. By 1970, the USAF took over the operation of Groom Lake. At this time, the U-2 and SR-71 spyplanes had both been tested and in service on reconnaissance missions. In 1967, the United States acquired its first Soviet MiG-21 and the US efforts to acquire Soviet weapons technology expanded. This was codenamed HAVE DOUGHNUT and still runs today.
In 1975, the Red Flag series of realistic air warfare exercises started at Nellis AFB, using large portions of the ranges surrounding Groom Lake. The box of airspace surrounding Groom Lake was strictly off-limits to Red Flag aircrews. It became known as "Red Square" at this time, but later acquired the semi-official title of "Dreamland" as a series of new exotic aerospace projects evolved in the late 1970s. These included the Have Blue (F-117A Nighthawk) and Tacit Blue stealth technology demonstrators. The testing of these aircraft brought extreme security measures at Groom Lake.
The Groom Lake base was considerably expanded in the 1980s. The main runway was extended to the south, and then a huge northerly extension built out onto Groom Dry Lake, today having a length of 27,000 feet. A smaller parallel runway was built in the early 1990s. Semi-recessed "scoot and hide" shelters were built on the main taxiway so that secret aircraft could be more easily hidden from spying satellites overhead. New radar's, satellite telemetry and other communications facilities were installed, and extra warehouse and assembly area's constructed. The base housing area was completely rebuilt, accommodating up to 2,000 people and an extensive recreational facility provided. Today, Groom Lake seems to be administered by Detachment 3 of the Air Force Flight Test Centre at Edwards AFB.
Perimeter security was also increased. Until 1984, it was easy to view the base from Bald Mountain and other hills in the Groom Range to the north of the lakebed. The USAF then extended the Nellis range military reservation to cut off the view...or so they thought! Two hillsides to the south of the Groom Range still offered a view of the base from 12 miles away. White Sides Peak and Freedom Ridge, these points were annexed by authorities in 1995. Now the closest viewing point is Tikaboo Peak 26 miles distant and some 7,900 feet high.
Clearly marked but not actually fenced, the entire boundary of the base is patrolled by an anonymous security force equipped with high-tech surveillance gear. Remote electronic sensors detect movement along known dirt tracks and roads leading towards the installation. It has been thought for quite a while now that the surveillance equipment is so advanced that certain sensory equipment has the ability to smell a person coming near the boundary, and distinguish him/her from other animals nearby. There are also ground patrols, often called "Cammo Dudes" who are assisted by special-forces helicopters.

Tony LeVier, Lockheed's test pilot assigned to test-fly the U-2 spyplane, claims the credit for recognising Groom Dry Lake as a suitable test site. The CIA gave U-2 designer Kelly Johnson the task of choosing and building a secure test site. In March 1955, Johnson sent LeVier and Lockheed foreman Dorsey Kammerer to visit potential test sites in the deserts of southern California, Nevada, and Arizona. After two weeks, LeVier presented Johnson with his impressions, and Johnson chose Groom Lake.

The Groom Lake facility has been known by many names since its construction. Kelly Johnson named the place "Paradise Ranch". Groom Dry Lake is the perfect location for a so-called secret base. Remote is not the word for the location of Area 51, it is the ultimate definition of the phrase 'middle of nowhere'. The population of this part of Nevada is less than 1 person per square mile. The nearest town is Rachel, situated Northeast of the base. The bases nearest road is Highway 375 also known as the Extraterrestrial Highway.
With all the public, media and congressional interest in Area 51 over the past 10 years the small town of Rachel has become a haven and meeting point for many people interested in UFOs and Groom Lake. The tourist factor has not been lost on the state of Nevada and it has officially named highway 375 'The Extraterrestrial Highway." In Rachel a number of businesses have either sprung up or now rely solely on the Area 51 phenomenon.
The aptly named Little Alieinn is a popular haunt for UFO chasers, tourists as well as military personnel. One of the most interesting establishments at Rachel is the Area 51 Research Centre. With 3 full time employees and a network of research staff are constantly looking for more information about the Groom Lake base and what is going on in deepest darkest Nevada. The centre has an impressive web site, the largest in the world dealing with the UFO phenomenon, of which Area 51 forms a vital ingredient.

As I have mentioned Area 51 has been subjected to many expansions with many hangers and other buildings added. Area 51 is rumoured to have massive underground facilities. This does seem likely, as the amount of people seen entering the facility cannot be accommodated by those buildings visible above ground.

There is rumoured to be an underground railway system running underneath Groom Lake leading to underground sections of the base. Here is an account of this story...................
The individual was hired by a major firm (Name Unknown) in the late 1970s as an electrical technician. The person thought it was to be a routine job, but ended up going into a secret program. The worker lived in Parhump, Nevada, and drove in daily to the Nevada Test Site. There, the worker, along with others, got into a bus with blacked out windows and drove off.

After an undisclosed amount of time, the bus arrived at a "train station", presumably someplace on the Test Site. It was described as a typical station, with rails and platforms. It was not mentioned whether it was above or below ground. Next, the worker got on the "train" (type of subway vehicle) and travelled underground for another undisclosed period of time to the facility the worker was employed at.

The only clues to the whereabouts of the facility were that it was UNDER a dry lake. Just which one was never related? The facility was quite large and the worker's job was to maintain wiring in the tunnels. Exactly what was being done at the facility, or its purpose, was also never told.

The worker was there until the early 1980s when there was an accident. Something was accidentally released; perhaps chemical, perhaps radiation, and about 70 people were exposed. About 1/3 recovered with no problems. Another 1/3 died. The final 1/3 "disappeared" and were not seen again. Just what "disappeared" meant wasn't made clear.

In any event, the worker knew several of the people who died or disappeared and was so upset, the worker submitted a resignation. There was great pressure applied by management to withdraw the resignation, but the worker was quite firm. The worker relocated to Colorado, and for about 6 months was followed by unmarked vehicles. Then, one day, the surveillance just stopped.

So what else is there to Groom Lake and its facilities?

There is an Area 19 connected to Groom Lake and this has not been mentioned much within any publications regarding the so - called Area 51

Area 19 would appear to be a rather mundane location for anything to happen. Well, there is a collection of oddities and slightly peculiar circumstances that suggest Area 19 may be worthy of a little attention. Area 19, along with Area 20 to its west, form the northern "cap" to Groom Lake.

What first attracts attention to Area 19 is a simple power line. It's visible on maps of the area. It begins at an even larger line near Highway 95 and runs almost due north through Groom Lake, terminating in Area 19. It would appear to be one of the main power feeds for the entire facility, with considerable load carrying capability. According to the known maps, the line terminates in Area 19 substation. Where the power goes from there is not shown.

Its point of termination is also worth a closer look. The maps show the line ending in the centre of an unusual double ring of roads, a configuration not seen in other area's of the Groom lake site. Strangely, there is no facility listed on any document, at least that I've seen, at the line's termination. Officially there just isn't anything there. Yet aerial and satellite photos do indeed some "something" there. Finally, the very boundaries of Area 19 seem to be drawn "around" where the power line terminates. The location is absolutely centred in the middle of the northerly "bulge" of the Area 19 boundary.

There is also a fairly reliable story of a "disappearing airstrip" and some sort of related semi-underground facility at Area 19. This is called the Cheshire airstrip.

The source for this information is a commercial pilot who, while socialising with his fellow pilots when the topic of Area 51 came up. He discovered that several of his friends and acquaintances had previously worked for EG&G (A Company Linked With Area 51). They had flown the "commuter runs" between Las Vegas and the Groom Lake site. That in itself was of some interest, but occasionally they flew to somewhere else in the Complex. This "somewhere else" is what made the story of such interest to pilots as it was far from routine flying.

Before these flights left Las Vegas, the pilots had to get clearance from NORAD to ensure there weren't any foreign spy satellites overhead. As they approached their destination, they contacted the ground and set up their landing pattern. What made this difficult from a pilot's viewpoint was that there wasn't a runway in sight, only miles of brush covered desert. Then, as they continued their approach a runway suddenly appeared in the midst of this sea of nothingness.
How was this accomplished? According to the pilots, the runway was painted (And Perhaps Textured) to match the surrounding desert. As the plane approached, sprinklers within the runway were turned on to wet the surface, thus making it stand out from the adjacent terrain. After landing, the passengers quickly got off, as the planes were not allowed to linger. The pilots related that the substantial complex the passengers then entered was camouflaged to look like a series of hills, or may have actually been built partially into the hills.

There is no information as to just what this facility's function is. When asked if he was told the location of the airstrip, the source took out a Las Vegas aircraft sectional chart and indicated a location at the very northern portion of the Site: Flat within Area 19.

Is there anything else to see or speculate about at Groom Lake or Area 51?

What about the mysterious lights seen moving about erratically in the night sky above Groom Lake?

It is now known that Area 51 was one of the major test sites, along with the White Sands base for particle beam weapons and other exotic weapons systems including lasers and missiles. These weapons are high-powered directional bean weapons that included Star Wars and Son Of Star Wars systems designed to intercept and destroy incoming missiles and aeroplanes.
Another set of projects, which carry on to this day at Groom Lake, is Electronic Warefare tests. These projects are carried out at several sites. These include:

Tonopah Electronic Combat Range - This is the main, manned threat simulator range and has simulated electronic threats that include surface-to-air missile (SAM) sites with numerous anti-aircraft artillery (AAA) fire control radar's to simulate a realistic array of signals. The threats are located in as realistic a configuration as possible (Given The Proximity To Live Bombing Ranges) to simulate enemy air defence arrays. The presence of acquisition radar's adds to the realism of the environment and provides data for command and control of the integrated air defence system.

Tolicha Peak Electronic Combat Range - This contains long- and short-range strategic threat systems and associated point defence systems, along with appropriate acquisition and ground controlled intercept radars. This simulates the defence of the deep interdiction and offensive counter air targets. The peak is a smaller range than Tonopah and has less capability, but it plays an important role in all the major exercises conducted on the North Ranges.

EC South - This range contains a limited number of electronic threat simulators representing both missiles and AAA, and provides a separate area for tactics development and training in the use of anti-radiation missiles against electronic threats. The EC South Range is not tied into the integrated air defence system of the above sites and, therefore, does not provide as realistic a simulation of the enemy air defence system. However, using EC South is much simpler and does not require elaborate planning.

The North Range - This contains four unmanned weapons delivery area's in addition to the sites mentioned. All four subranges consist mainly of tactical-type targets representing airfields, SAM sites, truck convoys, missile storage sites, artillery companies, and other targets. The type of weapons authorised for delivery depends upon the target selected.

The Groom Lake site was and is still being used to test top secret military aircraft. Aircraft so advanced we can only dream of what they are capable of.

As I have mentioned before Groom Lake was the preferred base for test flying top secret military aircraft. In the 1950's it was the U2 spyplane. In the 1960's it was the base for test flying the Mach 3 capable SR-71 Blackbird, at that time it was the fastest plane in the world. In the late 1970' and 1980's Groom Lake was the base for test flying the F-117 A Night Hawk or as its project name was then HAVE BLUE. One of these test planes crashed in Nevada and caused quiet a stir in UFO circles when they claimed a UFO had crash landed and the government was trying to cover it up. The military were covering something up but it was extraterrestrial technology but terrestrial technology they were trying to hide. Groom Lake has also played host to many other classified, top secret aircraft. This includes the Aurora high-speed reconisance plane, the TR-3A Manta, TACIT BLUE technology demonstrator and the Northrop B2 Flying Wing Bomber.

A well-respected publication called Aviation Week & Space Technology has proposed a current black aircraft that is something akin to a 1960s sci-fi concept. They depict an elongated diamond shaped vehicle Similar to a "flattened American football." The airframe's dimensions might be 110 x 69 feet. Due to intense heat, the vehicle would have a heat-streaked appearance similar to that of the space shuttle.

Contrary to intuition, the aft body would appear distinctly more pockmarked than the fore sections, as if the most intense heat was experienced in this region.

This vehicle would have a dual propulsion system. Jet engines buried in the fuselage would propel the vehicle to supersonic speeds, when a novel external burning mechanism would take control as the fundamental propulsion method:

"In the high Mach regime, misted fuel is ejected from the fuselage midsection -- the 'break point' of the elongated diamond - across the aft surface tiles, into the area between the fuselage and a shock wave attacked to this break. In essence, the sloping, converging aft fuselage sections form the inside of a 'nozzle' and the shock boundary constitutes the outer surface, creating an expanding exhaust effect, much like that on a conventional rocket. The fuel is ignited by surface heating - or other means - creating combustion that accelerates the aircraft up to the Mach 6-8 regime."

Eliminating the human life-support requirements at Mach 8, this flaming, hypersonic pumpkinseed would be unmanned and capable of on-board self- control. This vehicle would be as destructive as it is unusual. A payload of 120- odd nuclear weapons would be dispensed as the flaming stone skipped across enemy skies.

There is a lot of information out there in the public domain regarding Area 51 and what goes on at the base in general. The amounts of books written on this one subject is amazing and dumbfounding, but these can be quiet expensive.

One major source for information on this subject is the Internet. It is quite amusing that another American invention, the Internet, has since become the primary tool for accessing information, photographs and memorabilia. Despite the American governments attempts to silence some of these web sites it is relatively east to set up another if one is closed down. So, to a certain extent, the Internet has become a thorn in the side of the American government where Area 51 is concerned.

There are many sites, which include Area 51 or are solely devoted to this part of UFO folklore. In fact there are way too many sites to mention now, as I can testify as I prepared for this lecture. But I have picked a few sites, which are a cut above the rest and provide very good information.

The first site is the Federation of American Scientists. This is a massive site containing some of the best satellite pictures I have seen of the whole of Groom Lake complex. This site is well worth a visit.

The next site is www.desertsecrets.com This site deals solely with Area 51 and is well recommended for enthusiasts of this subject.

Another Internet site is www.ufomind.com. This site is maintained by the Area 51 Research centre based in Rachel, which I mentioned before.

The last Internet site is www.Area51zone.com. This is a good site for those people who are new to this subject and contains good information and photographs.

So there you have it. There is a base there, a so-called secret base where top secret military testing is done in near complete isolation, far away from most prying eyes. But is there something else going on in Area 51 with an extraterrestrial connection?
